This unit of work from Section B of the graphics syllabus is for Year 11 students studying School Certificate/NCEA. It is the first of two assignments from this section.
A wide range of skills is covered but successful execution can only be expected when students have been taught these prior to beginning the brief.
A two week duration is a realistic time frame to achieve good results. One week of class time at school needs to be set aside with the work being completed at home.
The use of a camera is asked for and should be encouraged for students to undertake design research.
Topics to cover before presentation of brief to class:
Conceptual sketching techniques: Each concept must be a different idea Each concept must relate to the design specifications Sketching should mostly be in pictorial The chosen concept should be highlighted
Colours to use on sketches: red to emphasize the background, blue to emphasize the object.
The importance of design research to help formulate ideas.
Design development. Design development sketches should show:
A refinement of the chosen concept
An exploration of the design specifications
Construction details [exploded pictorial sketches]
Design notes that relate to the design specifications using qualifying
statements.
Pictograms.
Orthographic projections to scale, to include dimensioning technique.
A discussion of a range of materials from which outdoor signs could be made.
Foundation detail: concrete footings and cross-section symbols.
Joinery detail that could be used in constructions of wooden signs.
Instrumental exploded isometric drawings.
One and two point perspective drawings.
Landscape graphics.
Colour rendering techniques.
