The Brief:

Teacher notes:

This unit of work is the second of two briefs forming a product design unit from Section A of the Graphics syllabus.

The first brief deals with the design of a product and orthographic presentations using a range of media.

Quality of graphical presentations are very dependent on:

(a) skills developed from previous years work
(b) skills developed through directed experimentation during the unit.

The unit is of a 15 hour duration (class time). An emphasis needs to be placed on the efficient use of time, alternating between modelling and drawing.

While only one final drawing is produced an emphasis was placed on experimentation, quality rather than quantity.

The model was expected to be of a very high finish and realistic in its appearance. The forming and surface preparation was carried out during school time, the detailing/ painting/ completion carried out at home.

Modelling material was 40mm thick high density rigid polyurethane (Foreman Insulation) coated with GIB finishing compound.
Quick drying Filler/ sanding undercoat brushed on, sanded. Quality of finish dependent on care and time spent in surface preparation.

Content needing to be covered in preparation for completion of the brief:

Modelling techniques i.e. forming of foam, surface preparation, painting, detailing.

Selection of appropriate pictorials, scales and viewing angles.

Presentation composition, presentation in context, visual elements.

Reproduction techniques i.e. tracing, photocopying, scanning.

Techniques for transposing from free hand pictorial drawings to aided pictorial drawings.

Rendering techniques using a range of media i.e. pastel, marker, coloured pencil, gauche etc.
